Pine Mountain Adventures

A couple of weeks ago Joey and I went to Pine Mountain looking for Red Creek and the Colorado cutthroat trout that are rumored to be there.  We took a few different county roads, some two-tracks, and put in about 7 miles of hiking, we figure.  It was so pretty up there!

We had a great time and a really good hike and found the creek but it was so tiny we doubted there could be any fish in it.  It was really just a little trickle.  We pushed on, though, and eventually found a couple of small, clear pools and there, by doggies, were the trout!

The pictures are from Joey's phone so you can't quite see the beautiful colors of the trout, but they were really neat!  Joey says that these are probably some of the most genetically pure Colorado cutthroat trout because they were inadvertently cut off from when other varieties of cutthroat trout were introduced into the Gorge...I think.  I might have the story wrong.  The whole thing was neat, though.

Joey had also heard there was a small lake up there but had never seen it, so yesterday we went looking.  We had a great time but came to a lot of dead-end trails that didn't have a lake.  Then we came upon these two abandoned cabins.  (This is accidentally a very short video instead of a picture but it's the only picture with both cabins.)

We investigated and they looked like they had not been used in years other than someone to scrawl a little graffiti on the walls.  We looked around further and found a spring that seemed to be their water source piped into the cabins at one time.  We looked a little further and found an outhouse a little further up on the hill.  We kept climbing the rise to see what we would see and there on the other side of the small rise was this:

We're pretty sure this is the lake we were looking for, but it's not very deep and we're not 100% sure it's the lake and not just a pond.  We walked all around it and found frogs all over the place, but couldn't see any fish in the water.  (We couldn't see any out of the water, either, but we really weren't expecting to.)

When we got home Joey looked up the property where we'd seen the cabins and found out they belong to the State of Wyoming.  We sure had a fun day!  Chappy, too, of course.
